From my desk here in Istanbul, I can hear the sounds of the Bosphorus – fishermen bring in the daily catch, tour boats set out for afternoon cruises and ferries sail under the majestic bridges that link Europe and Asia. As I look out across these storied waters, pasts the Maiden’s Tower to Asia, I am once again amazed by this eternally enchanting city.

The first to be enchanted by Istanbul were the ancient Greeks and, over the course of a history spanning thousands of years, Istanbul has been home to a variety of cultures and three of the world’s greatest empires: the Eastern Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. The city has also hosted countless visitors, including some of the greatest writers and thinkers, like Flaubert, Voltaire, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, John F. Kennedy and more.
